The 3rd Limb of the 8 Limbs of Yoga: Asana (Postures)

Ashtanga (eight limbs of yoga) - Wikipedia

The 3rd Limb of the 8 Limbs of Yoga is Asana, which means yoga postures.  Clearly, the most well known of all the 8 Limbs of Yoga and the most practiced.

I hope you have been influenced to practice living the first 2 Limbs of Yoga, which I wrote about previously, Yamas and Niyamas.   Patanjali's eight-fold path offers guidelines for a meaningful and purposeful life. Delve into this prescription for moral and ethical conduct and self-discipline.

Asana comes after the outward and inward guidelines of Yama and Niyama and prepare us for Pranayama (breath awareness/control), which we will touch on next week.   Asanas, the postures practiced in yoga, comprise the third limb of yoga.  The yogic way is that the body is a temple, the care of which is an important stage of our spiritual growth.  Through the practice of discipline and the ability to concentrate, both of which are necessary for meditation.

There are so many yoga postures to learn and choose from and many different styles of yoga and teachers.  It's helpful to try many different types and styles to figure out what works best for you.  There is a yoga for everyone.  It's also helpful to practice at least 3 times a week to really see progress.  Practice and determination is key.  Start a practice, create a habit.

Check out our many classes and styles here: or  We offer rooftop deck yoga, park yoga, SUP yoga, kundalini yoga, sweaty yoga, pilates.  Habit has it all!!!  We offer Yoga in Durango and Nutrition in Durango.  We hope to see you on the mat soon!!!
